Truck Accident Rollovers

North Carolina Rollover Accident Attorneys

Semi Truck Accident Rollover Information

The main cause for rollovers is turning too sharply while moving too fast. The force of inertia (acting in the direction opposite to the one it is turning) is combined with the force of gravity (acting downwards). When the combined force as applied to the centre of vehicle's mass falls outside of the rectangle formed by the wheels, the vehicle starts to turn over. A skilled driver may stop the fall by stopping the turn.

All cars are susceptible to rollovers to various extents, but trucks are extremely susceptible due to their size and mass. Trucks often rollover when doing sharp turns, or when going around a curve too fast. Sometimes trucks can roll over in a curve even without going too fast if their rear tires strike something (i.e. curbs) while cornering. Some rollovers happen when drivers try to return to the road after putting a tire off the pavement. Large rigs can also rut in soft ground or catch a pavement separation and roll over.

After the rollover the truck may end up lying on its side or roof, often blocking the doors and complicating the escape for the passengers.
